As we step into a new year, we naturally focus on fresh goals, ambitions, and all the things we want to achieve. But just as important—if not more so—is recognising what we don’t want to carry forward.

This simple yet powerful question encourages us to reflect on the obstacles, habits, or patterns that held us back last year and take intentional steps to prevent them from repeating. Instead of just looking ahead with optimism, it allows us to identify roadblocks and proactively clear the path for growth and success.

Why This Question Matters

Most of us set goals with the best intentions, yet without addressing what has hindered us in the past, we can fall into the same cycles year after year. By asking ourselves, “What don’t I want to happen this year?” we gain clarity on what to avoid, adjust, or change. This reflection helps us:

  • Break free from habits that no longer serve us
  • Set boundaries to protect our time, energy, and well-being
  • Learn from past challenges instead of repeating them
  • Prioritise what truly matters and remove distractions
  • Approach the year with greater intention and purpose

What Might You Want to Leave Behind?

Each person’s answer will be different, but here are a few prompts to help guide your reflection:

  • Is there a habit that no longer serves you?
  • Is there a mindset that is limiting your growth?
  • Is there a challenge you want to handle differently this time?
  • Is there something that drained your energy last year that you want to minimise or avoid?
  • Is there a pattern that has repeated itself that you want to break?

By identifying these roadblocks, you create space for positive change and personal growth.

My Personal Reflection

Earlier this week, we asked this question as part of our team’s annual goal-setting session. It was a thought-provoking question that encouraged us to think beyond traditional resolutions and focus on removing barriers that could get in the way of our success and well-being.

For me, one of my answers was that I don’t want to end every week feeling completely exhausted. With an almost two-year-old, I need all the energy I can get, and I know that if I do not manage my time and priorities well during the week, I will end up feeling drained when I should be fully present with my family. This means being more mindful of where I invest my energy and ensuring I allow time to rest and recharge.

Take a moment to reflect on what you don’t want to carry forward into 2024. What is one thing you can identify that will allow you to create a more intentional and fulfilling year ahead?

We would love to hear your thoughts. What’s one thing you are leaving behind this year?
